PCTELA Hosts the NCTE Annual Conference in 2009
PCTELA is serving as the host affiliate for NCTE 2009 in Philadelphia. This will be an exciting even and there will be a special opportunity for PCTELA members to work the conference in exchange for free registration and other amenities, including extra Act 48 hours.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English.

Once and Future Classics: Reading Between the Lines
In 1787, fifty-five delegates gathered in Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention. November 19-22, 2009, NCTE will host its convention in this historic city. As in 1787, the air will be rich with ideas and argument — point and counterpoint — and crackling with excitement. The theme of the conference, “Once and Future Classics: Reading Between the Lines,” is designed to inspire courageous conversations about traditional and contemporary literature and foster lively discussions of how we teach as well as what we teach.

Seriously, you just gotta go to an NCTE conference! I’ve attended two of the recent conferences (Pittsburgh and New York), and I’ve seen Amy Tan, Frank McCourt, Laurie Halse Anderson, Chris Crutcher, Jerry Spinelli, Yann Martel, and so many more authors. I’ve had my books signed by Laurie Halse Anderson, Francis Bok (author of Escape from Slavery), Ishmael Beah (author of A Long Way Gone), Georgia Heard (author of my favorite writing book Writing Toward Home). You will literally walk away from an NCTE conference with a suitcase full of lesson plans, curriculum ideas, free books, posters, DVDs, and so much more.
The Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project (PAWLP) is one of the oldest and largest sites of the National Writing Project a professional development network for teachers. Our model of "teachers teaching teachers" offers practical ideas for today's educators.
PAWLP offers a wide variety of three-credit and one-credit courses and in-service programs in teaching writing, teaching literature, writing/reading connections, authentic assessment, and special topics of current interest. These courses and in-service programs are offered at West Chester University and in sponsoring school districts and Intermediate Units throughout the Delaware Valley area.
