BASIC ASSIGNMENT TASKS:
Your overall goal is to understand basic literary theory and criticism. As you complete this assignment, you will be come more familiar with how and why literary criticism is used. You will be working in small groups to explore different theories. Each group will be responsible for one particular type of literary criticism. Using the information gathered through this web exploration, each group will put together a presentation to teach the class their assigned theory and how it can be applied to our reading of poetry.
This project will help us gain a basic understanding of the following literary criticism theories:
-Historical/New Historicism
-Formalism/New Criticism
-Psychoanalytic
-Archetypal
-Feminist/Gender
-Marxist
-Reader Response
To successfully complete this assignment, you must complete the following tasks:
STEP 1: Gloss the two articles about the foundations and theories of literary criticism found in your Middle Eastern Literatures packet.
STEP 2: Look up definitions for 12 literary terms related to literary criticism and theory.
STEP 3: Work in your small group to explore your assigned literary theory in depth.
STEP 4: Each group will create a Google slide presentation to explain your group's assigned literary theory.
STEP 5: Teach your theory to the class.

PROCESS AND STEPS:
In order to successfully complete this web-based assignment, you will need to use the linked web pages below. You will ONLY use the web sites linked to these pages. It will be important for each group member to share equal responsibility in the success of the group.
Read all directions. As you complete the steps listed below, keep track of your ideas and information regarding your assigned theory. You will need to be thoroughly understand the basics of your theory and how to apply it when you present it to the class on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10th.
STEP 1: Read about the basic foundations and theories of literary criticism
First, each group member should make a copy and then read and gloss the two articles found in our shared Google Drive folder. The articles provide a basic foundation for our study of literary criticism. Read through the articles with a highligher and pencil handy. Remember to write your questions, connections, and interpretations in the margins of the article.
STEP 2: Look up definitions for 10 literary terms related to literary criticism and theory
Use the websites listed below to look up the definitions for the following 10 literary terms related to literary criticism. Add these definitions to the literary terms to your shared Google document titled "Introduction to Literary Criticism".
Define the following terms:
- allusion
- assonance
- blank verse
- consonance
- free verse
- paradox
- persona
- point of view - first, third person object, third person omniscient, and third person limited
- rhetoric
- verisimilitude
STEP 3: Work in small groups to explore in depth one particular form of literary criticism
Students will be assigned to small groups, and each group will be assigned a particular literary theory to explore more fully. Members of the group will use the links below to research basic information on their assigned theory and apply their approach to our study of poetry. Groups will use the links found in the grey menu below to learn about their assigned theory. Using this information, groups will prepare a visual presentation to teach the class more about their particular theory.
Click on your assigned approach for links and specific information about what your presentation and visual should include.
STEP 4: Each group will create a 6-7 slide presentation to explain your group's assigned literary theory
Your group's presentation must contain the following:
- A title slide to introduce your group's assigned theory and the first names of your group members. As the PowerPoint will be posted on the web, do NOT use last names.
- A brief definition and introduction to your theory
- Basic background information regarding your theory, such as: basic history of your theory, why would someone most likely use this approach, and what questions does your approach address.
- Pros: Why would someone chose to use this approach? What are the advantages?
- Cons: What are the drawbacks of using this approach?
- Apply your approach to your assigned poem. Each group has been assigned a specific poem from our packet to analyze using their assigned approach. You will find these assignments when you click on the link for your specific group. Write a brief commentary on the poem using the assigned theory. Be sure to use textual evidence to support your commentary.
- Credits: Create an works cited slide for the images and works used to prepare your presentation.
After you have completed your slide presentation on Google, you will share it to Ms. Ward. Your group should then practice how they will present your slideshow to the class.
Step 5: Present your PowerPoint to the class
Each group will teach their assigned theory on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10th. Groups should be sure to review the grading rubric prior to presenting to ensure they understand what their presentations will be graded on.
